The party entered the Mournland, a magical hellscape full of mutated creatures. This is what happened in our Eberron game. For the few monsters that did have tweaked stats, I just did what my players did and created my own sheets. Due to this, I was able to pull data directly from Roll20's compendium and have the monsters added to my library with a few clicks. Detailed maps are given and monster stats mostly come from official D&D products.

Use the icons on the right as players and creatures, and boom – you’ve got yourself a fight. Need a quick map? Choose one from Google Images, upload it to the site, then post it for everyone to see. Where Roll20 is the map fanatic’s wonderland, Owlbear Rodeo is the improv DMs dream. If you are an off the cuff DM with random encounters, than this makes showing those combats nearly impossible. You have to be able to spend hours learning the tools and then being able to prep for a session. There are so many things going on at the same time for just one map. The downside – it is a HUGE learning curve.

You can have everything on screen exactly as you like, creating some truly unique combat maps. It also allows you to customize the terrain of the map to precisely your choosing. Since it’s been around the longest, Roll20 is a great resource if you are looking to get involved in a game. The upside of Roll20 is it’s accessibility to numerous game groups and campaigns. Everyone and their mother has heard about Roll20 and it’s gaming possibilities. It was one of the first, becoming synonymous with online tabletop gaming.

Roll20 is both the most revered and the most hated of combat map simulators. The best option for you all depends on what you are looking to get out of your combat encounters. Keep in mind that all of these options have some great benefits and some downsides too.
